Andy Baker has been fascinated with the guitar since first hearing the opening lines of Bob Segar's Night Moves as an early teen, and like so many other guitarists became hooked on those six strings and all the magic they possessed. But his passion for writing music wouldn't come until much later...after meeting and marrying his college sweatheart, graduating from veterinary school, starting a clinic in rural west Michigan with his wife (who also became a vet), beginning a family of 3...
Doesn't sound like the classic lonely road traveling troubadour, does it?
Let's not call it a mid life crisis, but somewhere along the line Andy began to write..."to steady myself" he says. "Trying to be observant, to catch the crazy moments flying by me." He wrote his first song for his daughter Emily, still a baby, for a local college writing course. It was an immediate hit with the teacher and class. "Goodnight Emily" is still a crowd favorite. "She's 16 now, and I get choked up now more than ever playing it. It's about a father gazing down on his sleeping baby, thinking about who she will be someday and how he'll have to let her go. Now it's becoming more and more real."
From there Andy began honing his skills as a writer and musician. His first CD "Whisper" was released in 2001, and from there, his life became what he fondly calls his "three ring circus" with his family, career, and music. Though opportunities to travel and spread his music appeared regularly, he decided to keep to home, preferring instead to bring the music and musicians there, beginning first with a house concert series and then a theater concert series called Grape Jam.
